Building the comic design system

2026-04-11

Started extracting the comic visual language into a real design system this week. ComicSpellCard, ComicAspectSigil, ComicGem, ComicBark, ComicHeroPopup, and ComicBurstBubble are all standalone components now with defined states and variants.

The old SpellCard has been fully replaced by ComicSpellCard across the entire game. Cards now have proper open, closed, and selected states, plus a specular highlight animation that gives them a nice tactile feel.

Popups got comic-styled entry animations — a scale-and-fade that feels snappy without being distracting. The craft reveal overlay uses this too, so discovering a new spell has a bit more punch to it.

ComicHeroPopup wraps a hero gallery with a school overlay inside a modal. It's the template for how popups should work going forward: design system pieces composed into a screen, not a bespoke layout every time.
